Imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been rushed to a hospital after what her family described as a catastrophic deterioration of her health while in prison. According to the foundation representing her family, Mohammadi suffered two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis. Prison doctors determined that her condition could not be managed on-site, prompting an urgent transfer to a medical facility in Zanjan, Iran.
Urgent Medical Transfer
The 54-year-old human rights activist, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while still behind bars, was moved from Evin Prison to a hospital in Zanjan after her health took a dramatic turn. The Norwegian Nobel Committee had previously voiced deep concern over the worsening health of Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned for years for her advocacy work. Her family has called for her immediate transfer to a specialized hospital in Tehran, citing the need for advanced medical care that may not be available in Zanjan.
International Concerns
Mohammadi’s health crisis has drawn international attention, with human rights organizations urging Iranian authorities to ensure she receives proper medical treatment. The Nobel Committee has repeatedly called for her release on humanitarian grounds, but she remains in custody. Her condition is described as unstable, and there are fears that without prompt and adequate medical intervention, her life could be at risk.
The incident also comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with Tehran warning that renewed fighting is likely after Germany responded to a US troop withdrawal. However, the focus remains on Mohammadi’s health, as activists and world leaders demand accountability from the Iranian government regarding the treatment of political prisoners.
