Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace has introduced a bill called the TRANS MICE Act, aiming to end what she describes as 'radical transgender-related experiments on animals' funded by US taxpayers. The bill, announced on X, quickly drew attention after a community note pointed out that 'trans mice' likely refers to transgenic mice—genetically engineered animals used in medical research, such as cancer studies—not transgender mice.
Mace's Response and Controversy
In a follow-up post, Mace denied any confusion and urged people to read more about her bill. However, critics suggest she may have misunderstood research grants related to sex hormone function that went viral in 2025. The group Americans for Medical Progress previously corrected misinformation about 'transgender mice', clarifying that the research focuses on understanding sex hormones in medical conditions, not altering gender identity in animals.
Political Context
Mace, who once called herself 'Trump in high heels', is leaving politics next year after finishing last in South Carolina's Republican primary for governor. Her bill aligns with Trump's unsubstantiated claims about gender-reassignment surgery in schools. The controversy has sparked mockery online, with some suggesting Mace might next target 'transmission fluid' or 'transatlantic flights'.
