Melania Trump's Mother's Day opinion piece in The Washington Post has drawn sharp criticism from readers, who labelled it 'tone deaf' and a 'disgrace'. The first lady's article, published on Friday, described mothers as 'the foundation of American democracy' and called for restoring 'the honour of motherhood' amid feminism's focus on career.
Readers expressed scepticism over the piece's authenticity and Melania's credibility on family values. One commenter wrote: 'This woman has done NOTHING of substance for women, mothers, children or anyone else well into her second tour as First Lady.' Another said: 'She lives a life of excess and materialism and she's telling mothers—some who work two and three jobs—to do more at home... What a disgrace.'
The op-ed follows the release of Melania's self-titled documentary by Amazon, owned by Jeff Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post. Readers criticised Bezos for publishing the piece, with one asking: 'Does Bezos' devotion to the Trumps have no bottom?' Another added: 'The indignity he's visiting upon this paper is hard to bear.'
Since Bezos' takeover, The Post has faced significant readership loss. After laying off 44% of reporters in February, the newspaper lost 60,000 subscribers, according to The New York Times. Several veterans have resigned, including opinion editor David Shipley and columnist Ruth Marcus, who claimed a dissenting column was axed.
