First Lady Melania Trump has broken her silence regarding comedian Jimmy Kimmel's recent controversial remarks, which she described as hateful and divisive. In a statement posted on X Monday morning, Melania wrote: "Kimmel's hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn't comedy—his words are corrosive and deepen the political sickness within America."
She continued: "People like Kimmel shouldn't have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC's leadership enable Kimmel's atrocious behavior at the expense of our community?"
Kimmel's 'Widow' Joke Sparks Outrage
Kimmel faced backlash after calling Melania Trump an "expectant widow" during a parody of the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Thursday. The event, which honors journalism and funds scholarships, saw Kimmel say: "Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow." He then added: "You know, Melania's birthday is on Sunday. She's planning to celebrate at home the same way she always does, looking out a window and whispering, 'What have I done?'"
The joke came just days before gunfire erupted at the actual dinner on Saturday evening in Washington DC, where President Trump attended in person for the first time during his presidency.
Online Reactions
Kimmel's skit drew sharp criticism online. Larry O'Connor, editor of the conservative outlet Townhall, described the comedian as a "broken man" and wrote on X: "@disney, you have a problem." Another user commented: "Kimmel is actually worse than the other 'comedians.' You can see the seething hatred on his face toward Trump." A third added: "It's not even inherently funny. You have to be deranged to laugh at that." One user labeled the joke "sick and tasteless" and questioned: "Is it time for ABC to pull the plug on Jimmy's show?"
Political commentator Link Lauren wrote: "Many in the mainstream media have stoked division and hatred for years. Jimmy Kimmel just made a disgusting 'joke' about Melania Trump becoming a widow. After the White House Correspondents' Dinner and what transpired with President Trump, now they suddenly want to act shocked."
Security Incident at the Dinner
Guests barely had time to enjoy their appetizers when Secret Service agents swarmed the Washington Hilton's ballroom following a series of loud noises. The ballroom, filled with top journalists, Hollywood celebrities, and Cabinet members—including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio—descended into chaos. The incident occurred at the same hotel where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981, an eerie historical parallel not lost on attendees.
As President Trump and the First Lady were whisked to safety, terrified attendees took cover and awaited news. The shooter, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, breached a security checkpoint before being swiftly subdued by law enforcement.
Trump, still in his tuxedo, addressed the nation two hours later. "When you're impactful, they go after you," he said defiantly. "They seem to think he was a lone wolf. We're not going to let anybody take over our society." A Secret Service agent was shot during the incident but is expected to recover. Trump noted: "The agent was shot from a very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job. I just spoke to the officer, and he's doing great."
The White House has confirmed the dinner will be rescheduled within 30 days, promising a "bigger and better" event. For now, Washington remains on high alert as it grapples with another attempt on the President's life.
