Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle has disclosed that he made a shock offer to manage the club alongside fellow former player Ossie Ardiles during their desperate fight against relegation from the Premier League.
Hoddle's Offer Amid Crisis
The revelation came during an appearance on The Jeff Stelling Show, where Hoddle detailed his proposal following a damaging 3-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest on 23 March. That loss underscored the deepening crisis at the north London club and ultimately led to the departure of manager Igor Tudor.
Hoddle explained his motivation was to unite the fans, the board, and the playing squad, believing the club "needed some love" to avoid a first relegation in 49 years. He stated: "It was a difficult time for everyone associated with Tottenham. I felt that with Ossie and myself, we could bring a sense of togetherness and stability."
Club's Decision and De Zerbi's Appointment
Despite the offer, Tottenham's hierarchy opted to appoint Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi. The former Brighton boss secured his first victory in charge against Wolves on Saturday, but the club remains two points from safety with only a handful of games remaining.
Hoddle accepted the club's decision, emphasising that his primary desire was for Tottenham to retain their Premier League status, regardless of his personal involvement. "I just want what's best for the club," he said. "Whether I'm involved or not, I hope they stay up."
Challenges Ahead for De Zerbi
Hoddle acknowledged the significant challenge facing De Zerbi, noting that time is running out for the team to escape the relegation zone. He added: "Roberto is a good manager, but he needs results quickly. The fans are anxious, and the players must respond."
Tottenham's next fixtures are critical, with matches against relegation rivals set to determine their fate. The club has not suffered relegation since the 1976-77 season, and the prospect of dropping to the Championship has alarmed supporters and former players alike.
