Shinnosuke Abe, manager of the Yomiuri Giants, Japan's most storied baseball team, resigned on Tuesday following his arrest for allegedly assaulting his 18-year-old daughter. The 47-year-old was arrested on 25 May after reportedly grabbing his daughter and forcing her to the floor at their home in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward.
After his release, Abe addressed a press conference where he announced his resignation and apologised for 'tarnishing the proud tradition of Giants managers'. He said he caused 'tremendous concern and inconvenience' to fans and the organisation due to family-related problems. The team's owner, Toshikazu Yamaguchi, stated they had determined Abe could not remain as manager, viewing the act of violence very seriously.
Police reported that Abe was 'furious' when his daughters, aged 18 and 15, did not listen to his request to be quiet and talked back. According to Nikkei Asia, Abe was intoxicated at the time. The 18-year-old later contacted a child guidance centre, alleging assault, leading to an emergency police call at around 7pm local time. The daughter did not sustain any injury, and police had no prior reports involving Abe.
In a letter read at the press conference, the daughter denied being physically abused and described the incident as isolated. She did not expect her father's arrest and said they have since reconciled. Abe asked for consideration for his daughter, noting she is 'at a sensitive age'. The Metropolitan Police Department continues its investigation.
Abe, a former professional player regarded as one of Japan's greatest catchers, recorded 2,132 hits and 406 home runs, helping the Giants win eight Central League pennants and three Japan Series titles. He became manager in 2024, succeeding Tatsunori Hara, and led the team to the Central League pennant in his first season. Following his resignation, offensive chief coach Hideki Hashigami has been named acting manager.
