Darren Fletcher has been cautioned that he may face disciplinary action from the Football Association following his critical remarks about the FA's handling of Manchester United's Youth Cup final defeat to Manchester City. The match, held at the 7,000-capacity Joie Stadium on Thursday evening, ended with City lifting the trophy, prompting Fletcher to voice his frustration over several aspects of the event.
Fletcher's Grievances
The former Manchester United midfielder expressed his disappointment with the FA for allowing City to treat the competition as their own. He highlighted that the fixture location, the atmosphere, and the build-up all felt like a City event rather than an FA competition. Fletcher stated, "It felt like a Man City competition for this whole build-up to the game." He also noted that individual City coaches and players were shouted out during the trophy presentation, which he claimed does not happen in cup finals.
Hackett's Warning
Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has suggested that Fletcher's comments could lead to a charge of bringing the game into disrepute. Hackett said, "I can understand the disappointment, but protesting after the event will more than likely land him with a charge." He added that Fletcher's remarks set a poor example for young players and that his superiors at United might offer him operational advice.
Fletcher also criticised the scheduling of Under-21 fixtures, noting that some players had to play just 48 hours after the final, preventing them from experiencing the occasion fully. He called for the Premier League and FA to learn from the situation and take steps to preserve the integrity of historic competitions.
Despite his frustrations, Fletcher praised City's manager and players, acknowledging that the better team won. However, he reiterated that the FA must reassess its role in such competitions to ensure they remain neutral and respectful to all participants.
