How Often to Wash Bedding, Mattress, Pillows and Duvets: Expert Advice
How Often to Wash Bedding, Mattress, Pillows, Duvets

UK households are being urged to wash their bedding more frequently, especially as warmer weather arrives. According to consumer group Which?, there is a general rule that most people should wash their bed sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers once per week.

Which? recommends washing bedding at 60°C, as this temperature is suitable for most fabrics and effectively removes sweat and kills bacteria. Lower temperatures may not achieve the same level of cleanliness. However, silk sheets should be washed at 30°C using a gentle detergent to protect the fabric.

Allergy Sufferers Need More Frequent Washing

For those with allergies or asthma, Which? advises washing bedding more than once a week at 60°C. It states: “Where possible, washing bedding at an even higher temperature may help alleviate your symptoms.” But it warns to always check the care label first and never assume the fabric can withstand high temperatures.

Regular washing also helps prevent bedbugs. Which? explains: “Washing your bedding regularly is also a good idea to help prevent bedbugs. Frequently changing your sheets will help you spot them, and washing and tumble drying at a high temperature can help eradicate them.”

How Often to Wash a Mattress Topper

Mattress toppers and protectors collect sweat, dust, and other residue over time. Which? recommends washing them once every two to three months.

Pillow Washing Frequency

Many feather, down, and microfibre pillows can be machine washed. Which? suggests cleaning them every four to six months. It notes: “If you're going to machine wash, choose a delicate cycle. Washing two pillows at once can help to keep them in position in the machine. Dry them on a low heat to protect from damage and fluff them back into shape.”

Memory foam pillows should not be machine washed, but the cover can usually be removed for cleaning. Which? advises reading the manufacturer's instructions carefully, as washing a memory foam pillow against recommendations may invalidate your guarantee. Pillow protectors help prevent allergen buildup, but pillows themselves should still be washed twice a year.

Mattress Cleaning Schedule

There is no strict rule for cleaning a mattress, as it depends on home environment and usage. If you regularly spend time in bed working, eating, or relaxing, you may need to clean it more often. Which? recommends cleaning and refreshing your mattress every six months and rotating it as often as care instructions suggest. It adds: “For allergy-sufferers, look out for the signs of an allergic reaction (runny nose, itchy eyes, dry throat) as these may signal it's time to clean your mattress.”

Duvet Washing Guidelines

Wash your duvet once or twice a year to keep it fresh. Many duvets can be cleaned at home, but the method depends on the filling and washing machine capacity. Which? advises checking the care label before washing. If you're worried about damaging it, consider using a professional dry cleaner. Only wash a duvet in a machine if there is enough room for it to move around; the drum should not be too full. For small stains, treat them by hand first with detergent or stain remover.
