The family of Richard Ayling, a 40-year-old father of three who died after falling from a rooftop bar in Birmingham city centre, have paid tribute to him as a devoted dad and former serviceman.
Mr Ayling fell several floors from Herman and Cooper on Colmore Row on May 3 and died the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, surrounded by his family. An inquest opened this week at Birmingham Coroner’s Court, where the coroner described his death as “violent and unnatural”. The hearing was adjourned until August 10.
The venue expressed its deep sadness over the incident, saying: “Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
A GoFundMe page set up by Duncan Watson has raised over £14,750 to support Mr Ayling’s wife Amy and their three children, Ronnie, Ellie and Logan. The page describes his death as a “sudden and devastating loss” and notes that he had recently married Amy and was building a life with her and their children.
Mr Ayling, originally from Germany, lived in Newhall near Swadlincote, Derbyshire. He had over 20 years of experience in the rail industry and also worked as a part-time firefighter. The tribute added: “He was the kind of person who showed up for others, whether on the job or in everyday life.”
