Erika Kirk Sobs After White House Dinner Shooting

Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, was seen sobbing as she was rushed out of the White House Correspondents' Dinner to safety after a gunman opened fire at the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday night. The annual event descended into chaos when gunshots sent approximately 2,500 guests diving under tables for cover, while President Donald Trump was swiftly evacuated by the Secret Service. Erika Kirk was among the first to be moved out of the ballroom, shortly after the President and First Lady were escorted away.

Emotional Evacuation

As she was led past a camera, the CEO of Turning Point USA was heard saying, "I just want to go home" while weeping. Eyewitnesses reported that she initially hid under a table before being quickly ushered out. FBI Director Kash Patel was seen consoling her, according to People magazine. A sponsor of the group, Derek Myers, posted that "Erika is okay but very upset. She was crying."

Suspect Details

The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from California, was arrested at the scene. Police stated he was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the gunman is believed to have been targeting President Trump and members of his administration. Officials suspect Allen traveled by train from California to Chicago and then to Washington, where he checked in as a guest at the hotel. Law enforcement examining his electronic devices and writings preliminarily believe he intended to target administration members attending the dinner.

Previous Threats

This incident marks the third time since 2024 that President Trump has faced a threat in his immediate vicinity, including the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, which injured him and killed a local firefighter. The President was not injured in this attack, but a Secret Service member was shot at, though their bulletproof vest saved them.

Erika Kirk's Recent Concerns

Erika Kirk, 37, took over as head of Turning Point USA after her husband Charlie was shot and killed while speaking at a university event just over six months ago. She recently pulled out of a Turning Point USA event in Athens, Georgia, with Vice President JD Vance, citing "very serious threats" and being "worried." Vance confirmed she had received threats and was very concerned. At the dinner, she was seated next to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and was a guest of Fox News.

Legal Proceedings

The suspect is expected to appear in court on Monday and face formal charges, including using a firearm during a crime of violence, according to US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro.
