A British holidaymaker, aged 24, may have lain undiscovered for hours after falling down a stairwell at a holiday apartment complex in Tenerife. The tragic incident occurred at Parque Santiago 2 in the popular resort of Playa de las Americas in the south of the island.
The young man was visiting Tenerife with a Polish friend, according to well-placed sources. The fall happened around 5:30 am on Saturday, but details only emerged overnight. The victim is believed to have been on the second floor when he fell "face first" to his death.
A spokesman for Spain’s National Police confirmed the deceased was British and stated, "This is not being treated as a crime at this stage. Pending the full autopsy results, everything is pointing to this man suffering a tragic accident."
Emergency services were alerted by a Spanish man just before 6 am on Saturday, but the estimated time of death is around 2:30 am, meaning the victim lay undiscovered for over three hours. The victim had attended an electronic music festival, Eastenderz Tenerife, in nearby Costa Adeje the previous day with his friend.
A source said, "The friend was sleeping around the time the British man died and was informed about the incident hours after it happened. It would appear he fell down stairs but the exact circumstances are still being looked into."
Officers are working on the theory that the victim woke up during the night and left the fourth-floor apartment he was staying in moments before his fatal fall on the stairs. A police report has been submitted to a local investigating court, and the full post-mortem results will be made available to the judge handling the case.
