The tragic shooting death of Samantha Emge, a 22-year-old aspiring interior designer, has taken a disturbing turn as her father reveals a history of alleged abuse by her boyfriend, Nation Wood, a former security staffer for President Joe Biden. Wood, 25, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter after Emge was fatally shot in their San Francisco apartment on March 24, but new claims suggest the incident was not an isolated accident.
Allegations of Abuse and Control
Bill Phipps, Emge's distraught father, has publicly stated that Wood was an abusive boyfriend and that their relationship was fraught with turmoil. "Their relationship was not good, and he was an abusive boyfriend. Samantha had been trying to break up with him for a while," Phipps told the California Post. He detailed how Wood had become emotionally and physically abusive, leaving his daughter feeling trapped and unable to end the relationship.
Emge's friends have corroborated these accusations, telling the San Francisco Chronicle about Wood's controlling behavior. They described instances where he would yell at her during drunken episodes and impose strict rules, including a 10pm curfew even when they lived separately. Additionally, friends alleged that Wood made racist and homophobic comments, further straining their dynamic.
A Fatal Night and Police Response
According to police reports, the shooting occurred late on March 23, when Emge was found with gunshot wounds inside the apartment. She was transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. Wood told authorities he was "dry-firing" his pistol, believing it was unloaded, when it accidentally discharged. However, Phipps claims Emge had just gotten out of the shower when Wood fired into the bathroom wall, raising questions about the circumstances.
Emge had only moved into Wood's apartment a few days prior to her death, planning to stay there while he was away for basic training with the National Guard. Phipps noted that she had previously moved out of a shared home due to Wood's alleged abusive behavior, and friends had been urging her to break up with him for some time.
Wood's Background and Legal Defense
Nation Wood's professional history includes working as a part-time security staffer for President Biden's White House security team starting in November 2023. His LinkedIn profile describes his role as an "independent pre-event site security advisor," with experience coordinating alongside the US Secret Service. He left this position in July 2025 and had recently joined the National Guard, with basic training scheduled just two weeks after the shooting.
Wood's attorney, Paula Canny, has painted a different picture of the relationship, describing it as one of deep love and mutual affection. "Samantha told Nation's family how much she loved Nation and how much she loved being a part of their family," Canny stated. She also confirmed that Wood was 16 months sober at the time of the incident and has been struggling with suicidal thoughts since Emge's death.
Legal Proceedings and Aftermath
Wood was charged with involuntary manslaughter shortly after the shooting and has pleaded not guilty. He has been released on a $300,000 bond and is currently held at a psychiatric hospital in San Francisco. The US Secret Service has clarified that Wood was not a member of their agency, despite his White House-related work.
Samantha Emge was a recent graduate of San Francisco State University and had been building a career in interior design. Her death has left family and friends devastated, as they grapple with the loss and the revelations about her troubled relationship. The case continues to unfold, with further investigations expected to shed light on the full extent of the allegations and the events leading up to that fatal night.
