Beyond Paradise fans have taken to Reddit to voice concerns about DS Esther Williams, noticing a worrying habit that could hint at a future alcoholism storyline. The BBC drama recently concluded its emotionally charged finale, leaving viewers speculating about what lies ahead for the beloved character.
Finale Highlights and Esther's Struggles
In the closing episode, Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) and Martha (Sally Bretton) bid farewell to Esther's daughter, Zoe (Melina Sinadinou), as the fictional community of Shipton Abbott came together for a touching send-off. Martha gifted Zoe a cherished family heirloom, a poignant moment that resonated deeply with audiences.
Throughout the series, Esther's tendency to keep people at arm's length has been rooted in a profound fear of allowing others close enough to cause her pain. However, Zoe's decision to travel and Esther's heartache over Archie have triggered a transformation in the character, portrayed by Zahra Ahmadi, culminating in the finale.
Reddit Speculation
Despite the heightened tensions, devoted fans believe further turbulence could be in store for Esther. One eagle-eyed viewer on Reddit noted, "Has anyone else noticed that when Esther's stressed or upset she often grabs a bottle of beer out the fridge as soon as she gets home?" They added, "I wonder if this will turn into a storyline around alcoholism in the next series, especially with Zoe being gone. Maybe something like that would be too heavy for a show like this though!"
Another viewer countered the claim, referencing the parent show Death in Paradise: "I don't think this is remotely a sign of alcoholism. If having a beer when she gets home makes her an alcoholic, the team in Death in Paradise is well gone after all the visits to Catherine's bar."
Zahra Ahmadi on Family Support
Last year, Zahra Ahmadi shared that her family are massive fans of the feel-good detective drama. Speaking to Hello!, she said, "My whole family watches the show. My mum's side are all from the West Country. So there they watch it, proud West Country people as well. They love it." She added, "I guess they would be the harshest critics, wouldn't they, as they're from the area that it's set and where it's filmed? And they absolutely love it, without fail. And trust me, they don't tell me that they love everything I do."
