An 87-year-old woman found dead at her home in Exeter has been identified as Shirley Billam, as her 92-year-old husband faces a murder trial. Laurence Billam appeared before Exeter Crown Court via video link on Wednesday, where a trial date was set for October 12.
Court Proceedings
Judge Robert Linford, presiding from Plymouth Crown Court, expressed condolences to the family and set a plea and trial preparation hearing for May 28. No bail application was made, and Billam did not attend the hearing in person. He had previously appeared at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he only confirmed his name and date of birth.
Police Investigation
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that emergency services were called to a residence on Millbrook Lane at approximately 12:40 PM on April 19. Officers discovered Shirley Billam’s body at the scene. A force spokesman stated that specialist officers are supporting the family.
Laurence Billam is charged with the murder of his wife. The case has drawn significant attention due to the ages of the individuals involved. The trial is provisionally scheduled to begin on October 12.
