Liverpool and Chelsea shared a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday, with the result met by boos from the home supporters at the final whistle. The match, which saw Ryan Gravenberch give Liverpool an early lead before Enzo Fernandez equalised, was described as error-strewn and insipid by observers.
Chelsea avoided equalling a club record of seven straight league defeats, set in 1952, with their first point in more than two months. However, the performance did little to inspire confidence, as both sides missed opportunities to strengthen their positions in the Premier League table.
The game was overshadowed by a controversial substitution by Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who replaced 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha with club-record signing Alexander Isak on 62 minutes. Ngumoha had impressed and assisted Gravenberch's opener, but Slot later revealed the teenager was suffering from cramp.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Slot said: 'I don't think it was some of them - there were a lot that didn't agree with the change which is completely understandable. He was having problems with his muscles and when I asked him he said he was not sure he could continue. I knew this would be the reaction because he is such a good player.'
Liverpool missed the chance to all but secure Champions League qualification, while Chelsea's hopes of returning to the European elite appear increasingly remote. The draw leaves both clubs with work to do in the remaining fixtures of the season.
