Diego Forlán is set to become Uruguay's temporary manager after Marcelo Bielsa left the role following a disappointing World Cup campaign. The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) president, Ignacio Alonso, told Teledoce that the 47-year-old former striker is enthusiastic about the idea, with an agreement expected within hours.
Bielsa's Acrimonious Exit
La Celeste were eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup after two draws from three games. Bielsa took the blame for the poor results and performances amid reported tensions in the dressing room. The team's campaign was marked by a storm of spite and ill-discipline, as described by Jonathan Wilson.
Forlán's Playing Career
Forlán scored 36 goals in 112 international appearances for Uruguay, including a starring role in the 2010 World Cup semi-finals, where he won the Golden Boot. He retired from international football in 2014. He also played for Villarreal, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan, and had two disappointing seasons at Manchester United before a more fruitful spell in Spain.
Coaching Experience
Forlán has had only two coaching jobs: with Uruguayan top-flight side Peñarol in 2020 and second-division club Atenas in 2021. He will take temporary charge of the senior team until March 2027 and also manage the under-20 side.
