Republican Representative Nancy Mace has filed a resolution to censure Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar and remove her from committee assignments, following comments Omar made after the assassination of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk. The move escalates tensions between the two lawmakers, with Mace accusing Omar of making “disgraceful remarks” about Kirk’s death.
In an interview with journalist Medhi Hassan, Omar expressed empathy for Kirk’s widow but criticised those who suggested Kirk “wanted a civil debate”. She also accused Mace of “harassing those she finds inferior”. The resolution, posted by Mace on X, aims to strip Omar of her positions on the Committee on Education and Workforce and the Committee on the Budget.
The filing claims Omar “smeared Charlie Kirk and implied he was to blame for his own murder”. It also cites videos Omar allegedly reposted on X after the assassination, though these posts appear to have been deleted. Omar described the assassination as “mortifying” and said she thought of Kirk’s wife and children.
Mace has faced criticism for her own rhetoric following the shooting, having previously stated that “if you have a different opinion from the left, they want to kill you”. Democrats have condemned the attack on Kirk, but Mace continues to target Omar, claiming calls from Omar’s district support the censure move, with one caller reportedly saying “She’s Somalia First”. Omar fled Somalia’s civil war as a child and later secured asylum in the US.
