President Donald Trump made an awkward joke about his marriage to Melania during a speech welcoming King Charles and Queen Camilla to the United States on Tuesday.
Trump's Remarks on Marriage
Speaking at a ceremonial welcome event, Trump gushed about the King’s “elegance” and recalled how his mother had a crush on Charles as a young prince. He then turned to his own marriage, saying: “My mother and Fred, they were married for 63 years.” Addressing Melania, he added: “That’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling. I’m sorry, it’s just not going to work out that way. We’ll do well, but we’re not going to do that well.”
Mother's Crush on King Charles
Reflecting on his mother, Mary Macleod Trump, the president said: “I also remember her saying very clearly, Charles, look young. Charles. He's so cute.” The comment drew mixed reactions from the audience.
King Charles is set to address Congress at 3 pm ET after the ceremonial welcome from the president and first lady. The visit marks an important diplomatic moment between the United States and the United Kingdom.
