Senator Ted Cruz has emerged as an unexpected ally of comedian Jimmy Kimmel, defending him against Federal Communications Commission (FCC) action following a joke Kimmel made about Melania Trump.
Cruz's defense of free speech
Cruz stated that the government should not censor speech and that the FCC should not operate as 'speech police,' despite personally disliking Kimmel's comments. The Texas Republican emphasized that while he found the joke distasteful, the First Amendment protects such expression.
The controversy
Kimmel's joke, delivered during a mock White House Correspondents' dinner speech, described Melania Trump as having 'glow like an expectant widow,' sparking backlash from the GOP. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, an ally of the president, subsequently demanded an early review of eight ABC TV licenses held by parent company Disney to determine if the broadcaster violated its 'prohibition on unlawful discrimination.'
Melania Trump's reaction
Melania Trump publicly condemned Kimmel's monologue as 'hateful and violent rhetoric' intended to divide the country, questioning ABC's continued enablement of his behavior. The former first lady called for accountability from the network.
Cruz's intervention highlights a rare bipartisan defense of free speech, even as political tensions remain high. The FCC has not yet announced any action regarding the license reviews.
