Senator Lindsey Graham's sudden death has triggered a wave of bipartisan tributes, but his legacy is marked by a relentless hawkish foreign policy and unwavering support for Israel, which critics argue has caused immense destruction. Donald Trump ordered flags at half-staff, and Republicans and Democrats alike fondly recalled Graham. Senator Dick Durbin honored him as a fierce partisan and key bipartisan ally, while Senator Adam Schiff praised his humor. However, beneath the praise lies a record of pushing for US military intervention and uncritical devotion to Israel.
Graham's Foreign Policy Doctrine
Graham's influence on US foreign policy was described by the Wall Street Journal as outsized. AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobby, called him a great friend. Open Secrets reports Graham received over $400,000 from AIPAC in 2025-2026 alone. His hawkish stance predated the second Trump administration. In 2002, as a Congress member, he advocated for war in Iraq to replace Saddam Hussein. The 2003 invasion, based on the false claim of chemical weapons, did not deter Graham from supporting it long after failures emerged.
In 2010, Graham promoted attacking Iran to neuter its regime, echoing later Trump policies. He opposed the Iran nuclear deal in 2015. In 2017, he backed moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, calling it Israel's undeniable capital. His support for Israel was so complete that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly considered attending his funeral.
Extreme Rhetoric and Threats
After the 2023 Hamas attacks and Israel's war on Gaza, Graham urged giving Israel what it needs, comparing the conflict to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. When asked about killing children and families, he rejected Christian values concerns and advocated flattening Gaza. He threatened Norway with tariffs and visa restrictions after its sovereign wealth fund divested from Caterpillar over ethical concerns. He also targeted activist Greta Thunberg, posting hope she can swim. He called for US military involvement against Hezbollah in Lebanon, wanting US fingerprints on the operation.
Beyond the Middle East, Graham lobbied for attacking Colombia, telling CBS News the US would blow up boats and kill people to stop drugs. At the Republican Jewish Coalition summit in October 2025, he boasted about killing all the right people and cutting taxes.
Impact and Legacy
The consequences of Graham's ideology persist. The genocide in Gaza continues despite a 2025 ceasefire, with a UN commission finding Israel killed 20,000 children and injured 44,000 more since October 2023, deliberately targeting Palestinian children. In Lebanon, Israeli air strikes kill children and erase families. War in Iran has resumed. The Caribbean is viewed as a lawless killing zone. Graham's hawkish attitude represents decades of failed foreign policy with increasing misdeeds.
Moustafa Bayoumi, author and professor at Brooklyn College, concludes that Graham's legacy is an abject political and ethical failure. Mourn him if you wish, but his ideology, if it lives on, brings more peril to all.
