Andy Burnham Set to Launch Labour Leadership Bid After Makerfield Win
Burnham to Launch Labour Leadership Bid After Win

Andy Burnham has been confirmed as the newly elected MP for Makerfield, marking his return to national politics for the first time since 2017. Following this victory, he is expected to launch a bid for the leadership of the Labour Party, challenging Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Leadership Challenge Expected

The result in Makerfield is likely to have significant ramifications for the country's political direction. Many now expect Burnham to mount a challenge against Starmer, with Burnham being the clear favourite to take over as the new leader of the nation. He is expected to step down as Greater Manchester Mayor, triggering a new election for that role, before taking up his parliamentary seat in Westminster.

Cabinet Resignations Looming

According to reports, several Labour Cabinet ministers known to be Burnham supporters had threatened to resign before the by-election, only to be persuaded against it by Burnham's team to avoid destabilising the party. With Burnham now an MP, those same MPs may now submit their resignations to bring Starmer's reign to an end.

If resignations occur and no other challengers emerge, Burnham could be declared Labour leader within ten days. If Starmer survives and Burnham launches a formal leadership bid, a full contest would be the most probable outcome, including other Labour MPs.

Process for Leadership Challenge

To challenge for the Labour leadership, Burnham needs nominations from at least 20% of the parliamentary party (81 MPs) and at least 5% of local branches or three party-affiliated groups, including at least two unions. Once launched, Labour's National Executive Committee will set a timetable. Burnham would then need to win a vote among Labour members, which polling suggests he would do.

This process could take weeks or months, with Starmer vowing to resist any challenge. However, if successful, Burnham could become Prime Minister before the Labour Party's annual conference in Liverpool in September.
