Andy Burnham is set to become the next prime minister after more than 80 per cent of Labour MPs publicly backed him to take over from Sir Keir Starmer. The former Greater Manchester mayor secured 325 endorsements on Thursday evening, the first day MPs could formally back a leadership candidate.
Burnham's Overwhelming Support
Even before nominations opened, the MP for Makerfield was almost guaranteed a coronation as Labour leader; he was the only declared candidate in the race to succeed Sir Keir. However, there were top Labour figures among the 78 who did not back Mr Burnham, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, John McDonnell and Jess Phillips.
The former Mayor of Greater Manchester said he was “deeply grateful” for the support, adding: "Their support comes from across the PLP and reflects a shared belief that Britain needs a new approach to politics. That is the circuit breaker I am offering: power out of Westminster, an economy rewired for ordinary people, and good growth in every postcode."
