Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has seen his BBC wages slashed but still remains one of the broadcaster's highest-paid members of staff, according to the corporation's annual report. Shearer, a regular on Match of the Day and a co-commentator on BBC's live match coverage, saw his wages fall from between £440,000 and £444,999 last year to between £390,000 and £394,999.
Shearer Still Among Top Earners
Despite that wage reduction, Shearer is still one of the highest paid presenters from 2025-26. The BBC must declare a list of salaries paid to those both on air and off air who receive more than £178,000 from licence fee revenue in the year.
The former Newcastle United striker's salary drop reflects broader cost-cutting measures at the BBC, but his continued high earnings underscore his value as a football pundit and commentator.
BBC Annual Report Reveals Pay Details
The BBC's annual report, which details salaries for top talent, shows Shearer's pay bracket decreased by approximately £50,000. The report is a mandatory disclosure under the BBC's charter, ensuring transparency in how licence fee money is spent.
Shearer's role on Match of the Day and as a co-commentator for major football events keeps him in the public eye, and his reduced salary still places him among the corporation's elite earners.
