BBC Director-General Says Working Hard on Regenerating Doctor Who
BBC Working Hard on Regenerating Doctor Who, Says Director-General

The BBC is actively working on regenerating Doctor Who, director-general Matt Brittin has confirmed, as the iconic sci-fi series faces an uncertain future following the cancellation of its 2026 Christmas special and the departure of showrunner Russell T Davies.

Christmas Special Cancelled for Second Year

The annual Doctor Who Christmas special has been axed for the second consecutive year. The 2026 episode, which was to be written by Davies and produced by Bad Wolf, was scrapped after careful consideration by the BBC, Davies, and Bad Wolf. The special would have followed the series finale last May, in which Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler.

BBC Confirms Regeneration Plans

Speaking ahead of the release of the BBC's 2026 annual report, Brittin said: "On Doctor Who, we've said actually that we're going out to tender (offering the programme to other platforms). That's a show that has regenerated multiple times in its 60-plus year history, and we'll do so again, and I think that's one of the great things about the 100-year history of the BBC, we can do that, and we can creatively renew content and shows that people love, and we'll be working hard on that right now."

Davies Departure and Future Plans

Russell T Davies, who rebooted Doctor Who in 2005, announced his departure from the show in June. He described Doctor Who's future as "unpredictable and new" and said he was "excited to see what comes next." Davies added that the programme's "big new future" involves it being put out for "competitive tender." He explained the cancellation of the Christmas special: "There won't be a Christmas special – we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no-one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there's no need for it. You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you'll be waiting for more Doctor Who than a one-off. So it's worth it."

BBC Spokesperson on Decision

A BBC spokesperson stated: "After careful consideration the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show, which ensures that when the Tardis lands once more, it does so in all its glory."

Animation Series in Production

The corporation confirmed that its previously announced Doctor Who animation series, which will air on CBeebies, is currently in production.

History of Doctor Who

Doctor Who, which first launched in 1963, follows the adventures of an eccentric Time Lord who travels in a spaceship larger on the inside, disguised as a 1960s British police box. The original series featured stars such as Tom Baker, Sylvester McCoy, and William Hartnell as various incarnations of the Doctor before the show was cancelled in 1989. It was revived in 2005 by Davies, and over the last two decades, actors including Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker have portrayed the Doctor.
