British Yoga Teacher Detained in Dubai Over Drug Allegations

A British yoga teacher who relocated to Dubai to pursue a career in fitness is now being held in the United Arab Emirates over alleged drug possession, with the potential for life imprisonment if convicted. Antonia Bettridge, aged 25, moved to the Middle Eastern country in November 2023 to build a future as a fitness professional, but her plans have been abruptly halted by her detention under the UAE's stringent drug legislation.

Strict Laws and Severe Penalties

According to a statement from the advocacy group Detained in Dubai, Bettridge is suspected of possession of drugs with intent to promote, an offence that carries a penalty of a AED 200,000 fine, equivalent to approximately £41,000, and life in prison. Notably, Dubai authorities do not require proof of intent to promote or distribute for such charges, making the legal situation particularly challenging for defendants.

Her mother, who has not been publicly named, expressed the family's devastation and confusion over the circumstances. 'Antonia's whole life revolves around fitness and healthy living,' she said. 'She doesn't live a party lifestyle. She moved to Dubai to build something positive for herself. We are devastated and just want clarity about what has happened.'

Background and Character

Antonia Bettridge initially worked as a sports coach before transitioning into real estate and subsequently training to become a personal trainer. Friends and family describe her as health-focused, disciplined, and committed to a lifestyle centred on fitness, yoga, and organic nutrition. She had been working towards launching her own business and intended to make Dubai her long-term home.

'We just want her to have the chance to defend herself properly,' her mother added. 'She is 25 years old. Her whole future is at stake.'

Regional Instability Adds to Distress

The family's anxiety has been compounded by recent regional instability and missile activity across the Gulf. Incidents such as an aerial assault on the Burj Al Arab hotel and increased fighter jet patrols over Dubai's skies have heightened fears. 'With everything happening in the region at the moment, it is incredibly frightening knowing our daughter is in detention and we cannot reach her,' her mother stated. 'We are worried sick. We just want her to be safe and to have the opportunity to prepare her defence properly.'

Advocacy and Official Response

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, has been supporting the family and highlighted how regional instability exacerbates concerns for detained individuals. 'When there is regional instability or security incidents, families naturally become even more concerned about loved ones who are already in a vulnerable situation,' she said. 'It reinforces why allowing defendants to prepare their cases from outside detention, where appropriate, is so important. We hope the FCDO supports her application for bail pending any trial at the very least.'

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed: 'We are supporting a British woman detained in the UAE and are in contact with the local authorities.'

Broader Context for Expats

British expatriates in Dubai have been urged to remain vigilant due to escalating tensions in the region. The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US, along with its allies, has led to extensive airspace closures across the Middle East, causing significant flight disruptions. Thousands of stranded individuals are set to return home this week as airlines increase schedules, but cancellations continue to impact departures.

Those in the United Arab Emirates are advised to:

  • Avoid areas near security or military facilities.
  • Follow instructions from local authorities.
  • Stay updated with local and international news for the latest developments.

The family remains focused on ensuring Antonia Bettridge receives fair treatment as they navigate this distressing situation amid a complex legal and geopolitical landscape.
