Toddler Fatally Struck in Tragic 'Racing' Incident in Michigan
A devastating incident in Michigan has claimed the life of a three-year-old girl, Estella Johnson, after she was instructed to participate in a dangerous 'racing' game with her mother's fiancé. The Kent County Sheriff's Office reported that the tragedy occurred on Friday around 4pm at Northland Mobile Home Estates in Cedar Springs, located approximately two hours outside of Detroit.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to police affidavits reviewed by MLive, Daniel Bryant, 33, who is engaged to Estella's mother, Ashley Johnson, was driving a pickup truck when he told the toddler to run alongside the vehicle and 'race' it. Bryant described himself as a 'father figure' to the young girl. He drove the truck at a speed of 10mph until he heard Estella's brother shout 'Stop', at which point he realised she was trapped underneath the vehicle.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Bryant standing near Estella's body with blood on his hands. Authorities stated that Bryant admitted the little girl was running on the driver's side of the truck, up the middle of the street, when she 'ran under the truck' during what he characterised as 'just racing up the street'.
Bryant's Arrest and Legal Proceedings
In a concerning revelation, Bryant confessed to police that he consumes a half-gallon of alcohol every day. He was subsequently arrested for reckless driving causing death. While being transported to the Kent County Correctional Facility, deputies noted a strong alcohol odour emanating from him, which lingered in the patrol vehicle.
Bryant appeared in court on Monday before D-63 District Court Judge Daniel O'Hara, who set his bond at $500,000. He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 15. If convicted, Bryant could face up to 25 years in prison. He remains in custody, and jail records indicate no attorney has been listed for him at this time.
Family's Heartbreak and Community Support
Ashley Johnson was not home when her daughter was killed and received the devastating news while at work. The family has been described as 'heartbroken and trying to process this sudden loss and facing unimaginable pain, grief and shock' on a GoFundMe page established to help cover funeral expenses. By Tuesday afternoon, more than $20,000 had been raised.
Estella has been remembered as 'a bright light' in the lives of all who knew her. Her obituary detailed that she 'shared an especially unbreakable bond with her brother' and was 'a curious, intelligent, outgoing, and feisty little girl' who loved to pretend, explore, and immerse herself in play. She attended North Kent Head Start, where she 'naturally took on a leadership role among her peers'.
Memorial Arrangements and Family Background
A Meal Train donation page has been launched to allow the community to prepare and deliver food to the grieving family during this difficult period. Estella's memorial will be held on Wednesday at K.E. Pike Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at the same location on Thursday.
She is survived by her mother Ashley, her father Samuel Johnson, and her siblings Colt, Sofia, and Savion. In a poignant detail, on March 21, Bryant had shared photos of Estella on his Facebook page from a visit to Burger King, captioned 'Lunch date with my favorite gal', highlighting the tragic contrast with the events that followed.
