Spain Travel Rules: New Passport and Entry Requirements for UK Tourists
Spain Passport and Entry Rules: What UK Tourists Need to Know

Spain remains one of the most popular holiday destinations for British travellers, with millions visiting each year. However, since the UK left the European Union, significant rule changes have been introduced for those entering the country.

Passport Validity Requirements

Under the new regulations, your passport must have a date of issue that is within 10 years of your arrival date in Spain. If you renewed your passport before October 1, 2018, it might carry a date of issue that exceeds 10 years, making it invalid for entering the Schengen zone, which includes Spain. This is a critical point for many travellers to check before booking their trips.

The 90-Day Rule

British passport holders can only visit the Schengen area for 90 days within any 180-day period. This rule applies cumulatively across all Schengen countries, so careful planning is essential to avoid overstaying.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

Under the new Entry/Exit System (EES), travellers entering Spain will need to scan their passport, have a photograph taken of their face, and provide four fingerprints. Once registered, the digital EES record is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. This system aims to enhance border security and streamline entry processes.

Additional Documents at Border Control

According to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), UK visitors may also be required to produce a return or onward ticket, and proof of valid travel insurance at border control. You may also need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds for your stay, and provide proof of accommodation. This could be a hotel booking confirmation, the address of a property you own, or an invitation letter if staying with friends or family. For those staying with third parties, a 'carta de invitacion' completed by your hosts may be necessary.

It is advisable to carry all relevant documents to avoid any issues at passport control. Always check the latest travel advice from the FCDO before your journey.
