US Soldier's Wife Released After ICE Detention at Military Base

Annie Ramos, the wife of a US soldier, was released from federal custody on Tuesday after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at her husband's military base in Louisiana last week.

Ramos, 22, arrived in the United States from Honduras as a toddler. A removal order was issued for her in 2005 after her family missed an immigration hearing, according to the New York Times.

She was detained on 2 April, days after marrying US Army Staff Sergeant Matthew Blank, 23, who is preparing for deployment. The couple had travelled to the base to enrol Ramos in military spouse benefits.

In a statement after her release, Ramos said: 'All I have ever wanted is to live with dignity in the country I have called home since I was a baby.' She added that she wants to finish her degree and serve her community.

The Department of Homeland Security cited a final removal order in Ramos's case, stating: 'This administration is not going to ignore the rule of law.' Ramos had applied for protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme in 2020, but her application was not processed.
