A teenage birthday celebration at an Airbnb property in Ohio descended into unimaginable terror early Saturday morning when multiple gunmen opened fire on partygoers, leaving a scene of carnage that has left the local community in shock.
Chaos in Columbus
Police in Columbus, Ohio responded to emergency calls around 12:30 AM on Saturday to find a scene of utter chaos at a short-term rental property in the city's North Linden neighbourhood. What began as a festive gathering had transformed into a nightmare, with multiple victims suffering gunshot wounds.
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant confirmed the devastating toll: "We have multiple deceased individuals and several others hospitalised with injuries. This was a targeted attack that turned a celebration into a tragedy."
The Party That Turned Deadly
According to initial investigations, the violence erupted when at least two suspects arrived at the property and began shooting into the crowd of approximately 40-50 people. The gathering was organised to celebrate a teenager's birthday, with many attendees being young adults.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as partygoers scrambled for safety. "People were running everywhere, screaming, trying to find cover," one neighbour told local media. "It sounded like fireworks at first, then we realised it was something much worse."
Airbnb Under Scrutiny Again
This tragic incident raises renewed concerns about safety and regulation surrounding short-term rental properties. The Columbus property was rented through Airbnb, which has faced previous criticism over party houses and security measures.
In a statement, Airbnb expressed condolences: "We are horrified by this senseless violence. We have suspended the listing and are supporting law enforcement with their investigation. Our global party ban remains in effect, and we have removed this property from our platform."
Community in Mourning
As investigators work to identify the victims and piece together the events leading to the shooting, the Columbus community is left grappling with the aftermath. Local schools and community centres are offering counselling services to those affected by the trauma.
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther addressed the media, stating: "This is every parent's worst nightmare. We will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice. Our hearts are broken for the families affected by this unimaginable loss."
The investigation continues as authorities search for the suspects and work to determine the motive behind the deadly attack.
