Federal investigators have disclosed that the shooting of rapper Offset outside a Florida casino was preceded by an attempted robbery. The FBI stated on Tuesday that a group ambushed the hip-hop artist while he was outside the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, just north of Miami, with the intent to steal from him before firing a single bullet that struck his leg.
Details of the Assault and Investigation
The assault occurred when a "large group" of suspects approached Offset, and after the shot was fired, one individual tried unsuccessfully to remove the rapper's watch. The suspects then fled the scene in two Chevrolet SUVs: a black Suburban heading towards Hollywood, Florida, and a Tahoe moving southbound towards Miami. The FBI is actively searching for these individuals, and no arrests have been made directly linking anyone to the shooting.
Detentions and Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, law enforcement detained two people, but evidence has not been provided to directly connect either to the shooting. One of those detained was rapper Lil Tjay, born Tione Jayden Merritt, who was arrested in connection with an altercation that took place prior to the shooting. He faced charges of disorderly conduct and operating a vehicle without a valid license.
His lawyer, Dawn M. Florio, clarified to The Associated Press that Lil Tjay did not possess a gun and was not charged with any weapons-related crimes. He was released after posting bond. The Seminole Police Department in Florida handled this aspect of the case, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Offset's Recovery and Career Background
Offset, whose real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, was hospitalized for a couple of days following the shooting but made a swift return to the stage. He performed at a music festival at the University of Arkansas on Saturday, demonstrating his resilience. He rose to fame as a member of the influential hip-hop trio Migos, known for their rapid-fire triplet flow that significantly impacted the trap music genre.
Migos achieved widespread success with multiplatinum-selling singles such as "Bad and Boujee," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, along with hits like "Stir Fry" and "Narcos." The group released four full-length albums throughout their career. This incident echoes a tragic event from more than three years ago when Offset's cousin and fellow Migos member, Takeoff, was shot and killed at a Houston bowling alley.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Probe
The shooting highlights ongoing concerns about safety and crime in entertainment settings, particularly around high-profile venues like casinos. Federal authorities continue to pursue leads, urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to apprehend the suspects involved in this violent episode.
