Following Nancy Guthrie's disappearance, multiple apparent ransom notes have been sent, many to media outlets. These notes have been contradictory, with some claiming Nancy is dead while others suggest otherwise. The latest note emerged just as her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, returned to her job as a presenter on NBC's "Today" show, a timing that FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer believes was intentional to inflict further distress.
Bitcoin Demands and Suspected Scams
Notes sent to outlets like TMZ were penned by an unknown person demanding payment of one bitcoin, estimated to be worth approximately £52,973. In an interview with Newsweek, Coffindaffer expressed skepticism, suggesting at least some of the notes could be scams. She stated, "They sent these right when Savannah Guthrie went back to work. That was by no mistake, that was absolutely meant to further torment her and her family." Coffindaffer added that the insistence on cryptocurrency payment, rather than seeking the family's offered reward of $1.2 million (£893,862), indicates the sender likely lacks genuine information.
Investigation and Family Response
A multi-agency investigation has been launched into the suspected kidnapping. Video doorbell footage from Nancy's home showed an "armed individual" wearing a mask and a backpack. Following her mother's disappearance, Savannah Guthrie temporarily stepped back from her role at NBC to assist in the search, later thanking law enforcement and the public for their support. Officers continue their investigation, with Nancy's condition remaining unknown.
