Adoptive Mother Sentenced to Decades in Prison for Horrific Child Abuse
A Texas mother has been convicted and sentenced to severe prison terms after a shocking case of child abuse involving her adopted teenage children. Susan Rae Helton, aged 53, was found guilty of keeping two of her eight adoptive children in cages for extended periods while subjecting them to starvation and physical beatings.
Years of Systematic Abuse Uncovered
The disturbing situation came to light in 2018 when the New Braunfels Police Department received alerts from child protection services regarding potential abuse at Helton's residence. During subsequent investigations, authorities discovered that a 14-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy had been confined in makeshift cages constructed from baby gates, sometimes for weeks at a time.
According to the Comal County Criminal District Attorney's Office, Helton maintained these horrific conditions to prevent the children from "stealing food" from the kitchen. The victims described being regularly beaten with belts when caught attempting to obtain nourishment, with other children in the household corroborating these accounts.
Severe Malnutrition and Medical Neglect
Medical examinations revealed the children suffered from severe malnutrition, with the two caged teenagers gaining only six pounds collectively over the five years they lived with Helton. All children in the home were homeschooled, and Helton consistently failed to follow up on medical referrals, exacerbating their deteriorating health conditions.
During a surprise police visit to the property, officers discovered the cage structures and confronted Helton about their purpose. She admitted to confining the teenagers, claiming they were "sugar-seeking" and prone to stealing food items from the household.

Helton pleaded guilty to four counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, receiving a sentence of 20 years imprisonment for each count.
