Fugitive Football Coach Accused of Sending Explicit Photos to Teen Student

Travis Turner, a 46-year-old married father of three and former head football coach at Union High School in Virginia, has been accused of sending explicit photographs of his genitalia to a 16-year-old female student. The allegations form part of a broader case involving ten child sex offences, including five counts of possession of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor.

Disappearance Amid Police Investigation

Turner vanished from his family home in Appalachia, Virginia, on November 20, 2025, just as state police were en route to question him. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and glasses, carrying a firearm as he walked into a heavily wooded and mountainous area. Despite extensive searches using drones and K-9 units, no sightings have been reported in the three months since his disappearance.

According to sources, Turner left behind his car, keys, contact lens supplies, glasses, prescription daily medication, and wallet containing his license and cash. His family attorney has stated that the family stands behind him, but concerns about his safety and wellbeing persist.

Allegations and School Response

The charges stem from text and picture exchanges between Turner and the 16-year-old student, which allegedly lasted for three months. The school reportedly became aware of the inappropriate communications when the girl was overheard discussing them in the library. School officials then interviewed the student without notifying her parents, a move that has sparked outrage from the family.

The family claims that Union High School principal Jerred Chandler failed to contact them or launch an official investigation. Instead, the principal allegedly suggested Turner had been tricked into communicating with someone pretending to be another person, implying there was no case to answer. The school board only officially terminated Turner's employment on February 9, though he continued to receive pay until the end of January.

Community Outrage and Systemic Issues

The alleged victim is said to be in a very depressive state and has faced mockery from other students. Meanwhile, the community's focus reportedly shifted to the football playoffs, with Turner's team continuing to play undefeated until their loss in the Class 2 State Semifinals game.

Families in the Wise County Public Schools district have expressed fury over the handling of the allegations, citing a pattern of similar charges against at least three other school staff members in recent years. In a leaked email to board chair Larry Greear and a Virginia House of Delegates member, a mother accused the district of sweeping under the rug misconduct and failing to report allegations to law enforcement as required by Virginia law.

The whistleblower's email highlighted deep concerns about a culture that allows such issues to thrive, calling for accountability and action to ensure schools are safe environments for children. The Daily Mail attempted to contact school district officials for comment but received no immediate response.
