Ozark Co-Creator’s New Crime Drama M.I.A. Hits Paramount+

Bill Dubuque, co-creator of Netflix's hit series Ozark, has launched a new crime drama, M.I.A., on Paramount+ today (Thursday, 7th May). All nine episodes are available to stream at once, offering a binge-worthy experience for fans of gritty gangster stories.

The series is set in the Florida Keys and follows Etta Tiger Jonze, a young woman thrust into the role of head of her family's notorious drug-running business after a horrific tragedy. Played by newcomer Shannon Gisela, Etta rises to become one of Miami's most powerful queenpins.

Despite the authentic portrayal of Miami's criminal underbelly, M.I.A. is not based on real events. Dubuque and showrunner Karen Campbell created a completely original narrative. Campbell told Creative Screenwriting that the emotional core of the season is the human need to belong, while Dubuque emphasised the fresh female perspective, comparing Etta's cleverness and reliance on others to Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders.
