Melania Trump Claims She Forced Donald to End Family Separation Policy

In her forthcoming memoir, Melania Trump asserts that she persuaded her husband, then-President Donald Trump, to abandon the controversial family separation policy at the US-Mexico border. The former first lady writes that she told him, “This has to stop,” emphasizing the trauma inflicted on migrant children and families. According to her account, Trump complied, ending the policy on 20 June 2018.

The memoir, titled Melania, is set to be published in the US next week. In it, she describes approaching her husband, known for his hardline immigration stance, and urging him to act. “I immediately addressed my deep concerns with Donald regarding the family separations,” she writes. “As a mother myself, I stressed: ‘The government should not be taking children away from their parents.’”

Melania Trump, who immigrated from Slovenia and became a US citizen in 2006, also defends abortion rights, a position at odds with her husband’s policies. She notes that occasional political disagreements were part of their relationship but were handled privately. The memoir does not address Donald Trump’s hush-money scandal involving Stormy Daniels.

The former first lady also addresses the controversy surrounding a jacket she wore during a 2018 visit to the border, which bore the slogan “I really don’t care, do U?” She explains that the jacket was a protest against what she considered false media narratives, asserting that she was determined not to let criticism deter her from helping children and families.
