Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert (MSE) has issued an urgent alert for the millions of UK passport holders planning holidays abroad. With spring in full swing and summer approaching, MSE took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a critical reminder for travellers.
Key Passport Checks for Travellers
The MSE post reads: "Travelling abroad soon? Don't risk being turned away. Make these two important passport checks." The advice urges holidaymakers to ensure that on the day of entry to the destination country, their passport has at least six months remaining, or three months for any EU country. Additionally, for EU travel, the passport must be less than 10 years old on the day of travel.
MSE warned: "If it's no to EITHER, check the country-by-country UK passport rules to ensure you won't be sent back."
Renewal Times and EU Countries
The Passport Office advises allowing up to three weeks for a renewal. The EU includes Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.
However, travel to Ireland differs due to the Common Travel Area (CTA), which also includes Jersey and the Isle of Man. While a passport is not legally required for entry to Ireland, most airlines mandate a valid passport for the duration of travel.
MSE's alert serves as a timely reminder for all UK passport holders to verify their documents well in advance to avoid disruption to their holiday plans.
