Mark Hunt Granted Bail on Domestic Violence Charge

Former UFC heavyweight legend Mark Hunt has been granted conditional bail after facing court on a serious domestic violence charge. The 52-year-old mixed martial arts icon appeared at Ballina Local Court on Wednesday, charged with one count of stalking or intimidation with intent to cause physical harm.

Arrest and Allegations

Hunt was arrested at a residence in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales on Tuesday evening. Police responded to reports of an alleged domestic violence incident, leading to Hunt spending the night in custody at Ballina Police Station before his court appearance.

According to police facts presented to the court, the incident occurred when the complainant was assisting Hunt with a task. The prosecution alleged that Hunt became aggressive and behaved in what was described as an "intimidating and berating manner," causing significant fear and distress to both the woman and a witness present.

Contested Text Message

The court heard more disturbing allegations regarding a text message Hunt allegedly sent to the woman. Police claimed the message stated, "I'm just going to murder you in the end anyway." However, Hunt's legal team strongly disputed that this message was ever sent by their client.

Importantly, Hunt has not been charged in relation to this alleged text message, with the current charges focusing solely on the stalking and intimidation allegations from the recent incident.

Bail Conditions Imposed

Despite opposition from prosecutors, Magistrate Lisa Viney granted Hunt bail with multiple strict conditions. The defence indicated that Hunt was likely to plead guilty to the stalking and intimidation charge when the matter returns to court.

The bail conditions require Hunt to return to his residential address in south-west Sydney and strictly avoid any contact with the complainant. His case has been scheduled to return to Ballina Local Court on April 30, where it will be heard alongside an application for an Apprehended Violence Order seeking protection for the woman.

MMA Career and Background

Mark Hunt remains one of the most beloved figures in UFC history, known throughout his long career for his devastating punching power and signature walk-off knockouts. The South Auckland-born fighter headlined five UFC events during his career and fought for the interim heavyweight title against Brazil's Fabricio Werdum at UFC 180.

Hunt shared the Octagon with some of the sport's biggest names, including Stipe Miocic and Brock Lesnar. Beyond MMA, he has participated in several high-profile boxing matches, including a unanimous decision loss to NRL legend Paul Gallen in 2020 and a technical knockout victory over cross-code star Sonny-Bill Williams in 2022.

In his 2015 autobiography, Hunt revealed a traumatic childhood, detailing how he and his siblings suffered regular beatings from their father and that his sister was repeatedly raped. This background has been part of the public understanding of Hunt's complex personal history as he now faces these serious legal challenges.

The case continues to develop as both the criminal proceedings and the Apprehended Violence Order application move forward through the New South Wales court system.
