Man Mauled by Lions After Releasing Them from Enclosures at Mexican Reserve

An allegedly intoxicated man was left with serious wounds to his arms and face after releasing six lions from their cages at a reserve in Mexico, leading to a terrifying mauling. The incident occurred at Los Pinos Reserve in San Pedro Cholula, Mexico, on Monday, where the man, estimated to be around 40 years old, scaled a fence and unleashed the big cats.

Graphic Details of the Attack

The animals, housed in a sanctuary for former circus animals, turned on the man after he freed them. In a desperate attempt to escape, he sought refuge inside one of their cages, where he was trapped as the lions prowled nearby. Shockingly, the man even filmed the lions roaring and moving close to the cage he was hiding in, capturing shaky footage that later emerged on a Mexican newspaper's YouTube channel.

During the chaos, a dog present at the scene was killed by the lions. Keepers eventually arrived and raised the alarm, rescuing the man and returning the lions to their enclosures unharmed. The individual, dressed in a torn black sweatshirt and shredded blue jeans, was taken to hospital with severe injuries.

Aftermath and Injuries

Photos from the hospital show the man with extensive facial injuries, including bandages, swelling, and scratches. It appears he was protecting himself behind a gate that had been pulled open, creating a triangular space between the gate and the inner fence. The footage also shows a lifeless, blurred animal in the grass, with sounds of birds and lions in the background.

Recent Lion Attack Incidents

This is not the only lion-related incident to emerge recently. In February, a 10-year-old girl was reportedly grasped by a lion while feeding it at Shantou Zhongshan Park Zoo in Guangdong, China. The girl offered food through the cage bars, but the lion quickly extended its paw, caught her trouser leg, and pulled her forward.

A zookeeper rushed in, gripping the girl and using a metal rod to jab at the lion, freeing her after about half a minute. The girl was brought into a safety buffer zone, but she was too young to participate in the feeding. The zookeeper has reportedly been suspended and reassigned following the incident.

Both cases highlight the dangers of interacting with wild animals, even in controlled environments, and serve as a stark reminder of the risks involved.
