A man was arrested after walking into Aetna's headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut, with an AR-style pistol in his backpack on Thursday morning. Security personnel detained him within three minutes of his entry at around 10 a.m., before police arrived on the scene, according to Hartford Police Lieutenant Aaron Boisvert.
The man's intentions remain unclear, and no information on criminal charges has been released. He was taken to Hartford police headquarters for questioning. CVS Health, Aetna's parent company based in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, issued a brief statement confirming that a suspicious person was apprehended by security and taken into custody by local police.
The incident occurs amid heightened concerns over the safety of healthcare executives following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City in December 2024. Luigi Mangione, an Ivy League graduate from Maryland, has pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges related to the killing and has become a figure of controversy among those critical of the health insurance industry.
In February, CVS Health announced it would lay off over 300 remote workers reporting to the Aetna headquarters. The company has not commented further on the arrest.
