Gabriele Vaccaro, along with two friends, was returning to their parked vehicle at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, when they encountered a group of five youths. According to police reports, the confrontation began when the group demanded that Vaccaro hand over the pizzas he was carrying. Witnesses and investigators suggest that a heated argument quickly escalated, culminating in one of the youths allegedly stabbing Vaccaro in the neck and abdomen with a screwdriver.

Following the stabbing, the assailants fled the scene. Vaccaro's friends, unaware of the severity of his injuries, initially took him home.
