A British national was among four people stabbed in football-related clashes in central Rome, Italian media report. The incident occurred shortly after 9pm on Wednesday at a bar in the Monti area, ahead of a Europa League match between Lazio and Sevilla.
About 40 people were involved in the brawl, which began inside the bar and continued outside. Two Spanish nationals and an American were also injured. The Briton and one Spaniard are in serious condition at Santo Spirito hospital, according to Gazzetto dello Sport.
It remains unclear whether the Briton was a football fan or a tourist caught up in the violence. Police are investigating whether Italian ultras, known for their organisation and extreme violence, were involved. Witnesses reported seeing dozens of people dressed in black, some wearing helmets and carrying sticks and belts.
The fighting took place on Via Leonina, a tourist area that shows live football matches. Some fans sought refuge in nearby bars and restaurants. A bar owner described the scene: 'It was quiet, then suddenly we heard shouting and glass breaking. One Spaniard with a leg injury came in asking for help, scared and upset.'
