FCDO Warns Against Travel to 15 Countries Ahead of May Half-Term
FCDO Warns Against Travel to 15 Countries for Half-Term

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for British tourists ahead of the May half-term, warning against travel to 15 countries. Half-term week, typically the last week of May, sees a surge in holiday bookings, but the FCDO urges travellers to check the latest security alerts for their destinations.

Countries with 'Do Not Travel' Warnings

The FCDO advises against all travel to the following countries: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Mali, Niger, Palestine, Russia, South Sudan, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Many of these are in the Middle East, but the list also includes Haiti and Russia.

Regional Advisories for Popular Destinations

Some countries, even major holiday spots, have areas Brits should avoid. Tunisia, which welcomes around 450,000 British tourists annually, advises against travel to border areas with Libya and Algeria due to cross-border terrorist activity and security operations. The FCDO states: "This is due to cross-border terrorist activity and operations by the Tunisian security forces." Tourists should monitor updates as situations can change rapidly.

United Arab Emirates Restrictions

Holidays to Dubai and Abu Dhabi remain off-limits as the FCDO continues to advise against all but essential travel to the UAE. The advice notes: "Regional escalation poses significant security risks and has led to travel disruption. The Iranian regime has publicly stated its intention to target locations associated with the United States and Israel. This includes US or Israeli-linked organisations, businesses, facilities and institutions. Stay away from areas around security or military facilities, and US or Israeli-linked locations."

Importance of Checking Travel Insurance

Travelling to countries or areas advised against by the FCDO generally invalidates standard travel insurance policies and may limit consular assistance. Always check the latest FCDO advice before planning a trip and sign up for alerts to receive real-time updates.
