Former NRL premiership star Matt Utai has been hospitalised with serious injuries after being shot multiple times outside his suburban Sydney home. The 2004 grand final hero was targeted in an early morning attack that police believe is connected to escalating gang violence and the alleged criminal associations of his son.
Charges Laid in Connection to Shooting
Police have arrested and charged a 25-year-old man from Marsden Park and a 15-year-old boy from Emerton over the alleged shooting. Both individuals face serious charges including shooting with intent to murder and participating in a criminal group contributing to criminal activity.
The pair were arrested on Friday night following a police investigation into the attack that occurred on Tuesday morning in Greenacre, in southwest Sydney. Both were refused bail and appeared before court on Saturday.
Series of Targeted Attacks
Detectives believe the shooting was part of a coordinated series of attacks targeting the Utai family. In addition to the Greenacre shooting, shots were fired at a home in outer western Sydney early Wednesday morning, followed by a firebombing incident in Guildford West hours later.
A woman in her 50s who was inside the first targeted home escaped uninjured. Police have confirmed all incidents were directed at the Utai family as part of what appears to be escalating gang conflict.
Additional Arrests Made
Four additional people have been charged in connection with the spate of attacks. Among them are a 19-year-old man accused of picking up the alleged gunman and a 16-year-old alleged to have handled the weapon used in the shooting.
Both face charges of being an accessory after the fact to a shooting with intent to murder, highlighting the coordinated nature of the alleged criminal activity.
Utai's Condition and Rugby League Career
Matt Utai underwent surgery for serious leg wounds sustained in the attack and has since been transferred to a different hospital where he remains in serious condition. The former rugby league star played 167 NRL games during his career, representing both the Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers.
Utai famously starred in the 2004 NRL grand final, scoring two tries as his Bulldogs defeated the Sydney Roosters to claim the premiership. He also represented both New Zealand and Samoa at international level during his distinguished career.
Club Reaction to Shooting
The Canterbury Bulldogs, Utai's former club where he achieved premiership success, released a statement expressing deep shock and sadness at news of the shooting. The club acknowledged Utai's significant contributions to their history and extended support to his family during this difficult time.
Utai joined the Wests Tigers in 2011 and spent three seasons with the club before retiring from professional rugby league. His career achievements and community standing have made the violent attack particularly shocking to the rugby league community and wider public.
