Newly released CCTV footage from outside Jeffrey Epstein’s cell on the night of his death has contradicted Attorney General Pam Bondi’s assertion that the recording was overwritten. The video, part of a cache of 33,000 pages of records released by the US House oversight committee, includes a previously missing minute that had fuelled conspiracy theories.
The footage shows guards working outside Epstein’s cell at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center in August 2019, with nothing out of the ordinary. The release also includes two hours of unseen video, including Epstein being escorted to make a phone call. Bondi had previously claimed the prison’s CCTV system reset every 24 hours, causing a one-minute gap, but CBS reported the full version existed.
Most of the released files are already publicly known, including court documents relating to Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, who is reportedly seeking a pardon from the Trump administration. The release comes amid renewed scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s ties to Epstein, with some Republicans joining Democrats in demanding full transparency.
Epstein’s victims are rallying in Washington DC to demand justice, as the controversy causes a rare split in Republican ranks. Congressman Thomas Massie has filed a discharge petition to force release of all Epstein files, which House Speaker Mike Johnson has dismissed as “meaningless”.
