An inquest has revealed the disturbing discovery of an elderly woman found dead inside a chest freezer at her own home. The hearing detailed how retired company secretary Sylvia Phillips, who was in her 80s, was located by police during a welfare check at her seaside property in Porthcawl.
Police Discovery and Ongoing Investigation
Coroner's officer Joanne Webb informed the Pontypridd hearing that authorities received a call from a GP practice requesting a welfare check on an elderly patient. During their search of the property on Poplar Crescent, officers made the grim discovery of a female body believed to be Sylvia Phillips stored within a chest freezer.
The inquest opening confirmed that criminal investigations remain ongoing into this tragic case. Sylvia Phillips was born in Gloucester in March 1936, though the exact date of her death has not been established.
Post-Mortem Examination and Legal Proceedings
A post-mortem examination was conducted by Dr Stephen Leadbeatter at the University Hospital of Wales on March 2nd. The pathologist provided a provisional cause of death listed as "awaiting further investigations," indicating more forensic work is required.
Coroner Graeme Hughes adjourned the hearing for a date to be fixed, allowing time for the completion of these crucial investigations.
Son Faces Serious Charges
Sylvia Phillips' 60-year-old son, company director Christopher Phillips, has been charged with preventing a lawful and decent burial of his mother. Additionally, he faces allegations of carrying out fraudulent transactions using her bank account.
Phillips appeared at Cardiff Crown Court last month, where he confirmed his name, date of birth, and address. Judge Vanessa Francis explained that pleas could not be entered at this stage because prosecution documents had not been finalized.
The judge emphasized that it would not be just to insist on pleas being taken when "the way in which the case is being put is so unclear." Phillips' legal team requires clearer details about exactly what he is accused of doing before proceeding further.
Police Response and Remand
South Wales Police attended the address on Poplar Crescent at 1:45 PM on Tuesday, February 17th, following a call concerning the welfare of a woman. A force spokesman confirmed that a woman in her 80s from Porthcawl was found dead within the property.
Phillips has been further remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled hearing next month. As he left the courtroom, he reportedly said "thank you" to the judge, though the context of this remark remains unclear.
The case continues to develop as authorities work to unravel the circumstances surrounding Sylvia Phillips' death and the subsequent allegations against her son.
