Drugged Driver Jailed After M1 Crash and Three-Wheeled Motorway Journey

A driver under the influence of drugs, who collided with the central reservation on the M1 motorway and then continued driving on only three wheels, has been sentenced to prison. Omar Makhluf, aged 20, was operating his Mercedes vehicle on the northbound carriageway near Newport Pagnell when the incident occurred.

Details of the Dangerous Incident

During the collision, Makhluf's car struck the central reservation forcefully, causing significant damage that resulted in one wheel being completely sheared off down to the rim. Despite this severe impairment to his vehicle, he did not stop immediately. Instead, he drove for several additional miles before finally pulling over at a service station.

When police officers arrived to question him, Makhluf exhibited clear signs of impairment. He struggled to remain awake during the interview and was observed yawning repeatedly. Initially, he denied that his driving had been dangerous, but the evidence against him was substantial.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Makhluf was arrested on the same day as the incident and formally charged on August 13, 2025. Last week, in court, he pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving and one count of driving while unfit due to drugs. His address was given as Keel Close in Barking.

The court handed down a total sentence of 22 months in prison. Additionally, Makhluf was disqualified from driving for four years and 336 days. This penalty also accounts for other driving offences he committed elsewhere in the country, highlighting a pattern of reckless behaviour.

Police Response and Road Safety Warning

Investigating officer James Holmes, from the Roads Policing Unit, commented on the case. He stated, 'This incident on the M1 could easily have had far more serious consequences, and we are thankful that no one was injured.' Holmes emphasised that dangerous driving endangers lives and that law enforcement remains dedicated to maintaining road safety.

He added, 'Makhluf has now admitted his actions in court and has been sentenced. Dangerous driving puts lives at risk, and we remain committed to keeping our roads safe. We encourage everyone to drive responsibly and safely.' This case serves as a stark reminder of the severe penalties for driving under the influence and engaging in hazardous behaviour on public roads.
