Cavapoo Killed While Defending Owner in Padstow Garden Attack

A woman from Cornwall has described the heart-wrenching moment her beloved pet dog was killed while trying to protect her from a violent attack in her own garden. The traumatic incident occurred in Padstow, leaving the owner both physically injured and emotionally devastated.

Heroic Pet Sacrifices Life for Owner

Kayla Colwill, aged 27, was at her home in Boyd Avenue when another dog escaped from a neighbouring property and entered her garden. Her three-year-old cavapoo, named Herbie, immediately sprang into action to defend his owner from the aggressive intruder.

"The dog was shaking my dog round, and then he dropped my dog where I could see that my dog's back legs had gone," Colwill recounted to CornwallLive. "And he came for me and bit me on the hand. And then my dog was like, 'no way' and bit the dog on the butt to say 'no, you're not going for her'. And yeah, that was just the end of my dog. He went down fighting for his mum. It was one of the most traumatic things."

Owner Sustains Injuries During Violent Ordeal

The attack, which occurred on April 2, left Colwill with visible bite marks on her hand in addition to the fatal injuries sustained by her loyal companion. Herbie, the cavapoo who had been part of her family for three years, suffered catastrophic injuries during the confrontation and did not survive the attack.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they were called to the scene following reports of the dog attack. Officers attended the property and seized two dogs from the neighbouring residence. The dog responsible for the fatal attack has since been euthanised following the investigation.

Police Investigation and Legal Consequences

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police provided details of their response: "We were called following a report of a dog attack in Boyd Avenue, Padstow, on April 2. It was reported a dog escaped from a property and attacked another dog, causing fatal injuries. The owner of the injured dog was also hurt. The dog that caused the injuries has since been euthanised."

The police statement continued: "Another dog seized at the scene – that didn't escape the garden and was not involved in the attack – has been returned to the owner after relevant checks were completed. The owner has been issued a Dog Control Order."

Community Impact and Safety Concerns

The incident has raised serious concerns about dog control and public safety in residential areas of Cornwall. Dog Control Orders are legal measures that can impose restrictions on dog owners, potentially including requirements for muzzling, keeping dogs on leads, or excluding them from certain areas.

Colwill's experience highlights the devastating consequences that can occur when dogs are not properly contained or controlled by their owners. The emotional trauma of witnessing her pet's heroic final moments while being attacked herself has left lasting psychological scars.

Local authorities continue to emphasise the importance of responsible pet ownership and proper containment measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers posed by uncontrolled animals in residential neighbourhoods.
