Jamie McDonald, a 62-year-old foster carer described by her family as "the sun" for her gentle and empathetic nature, vanished on May 1, 2024. Her disappearance immediately alarmed relatives, who reported her missing to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office on May 12 after being unable to contact her.
On June 14, 2024, investigators made a grim discovery in a drainage ditch near McDonald's home. Partial remains were recovered and identified as belonging to the missing woman. The same day, authorities arrested Luequita Sclesky, 32, and her husband Duane David Sclesky, 38, charging them with McDonald's murder and the killing of another victim, 68-year-old Kenneth Zickendrath.
Police allege the couple not only committed the murders but also used stolen personal information to access their victims' bank accounts. Luequita Sclesky faces additional charges including 75 counts of misusing personal identification of deceased persons, while Duane Sclesky has been charged with fentanyl trafficking and drug possession offenses.

For Hope Yates-McDonald, the discovery of her mother's partial remains marked only the beginning of her ordeal. "It was a relief that she wasn't missing anymore," Hope explained, "but then I learned how violently she had been killed."
Medical examinations revealed that not all of Jamie McDonald's bones had been recovered from the drainage ditch where her body was found. The moving water had carried away some remains, particularly from the wrists downward. Hope became determined to find every missing fragment, believing this would allow her to properly grieve and lay her mother to rest.
"I couldn't leave her there," Hope said. "I didn't want to lose parts of her in that drainage ditch."
Extraordinary Recovery Efforts
When authorities indicated they could not allocate further resources to the recovery operation, Hope took matters into her own hands. The radiology student from Elizabethtown, Kentucky embarked on an extraordinary personal mission that has cost her at least $10,000 to $15,000 so far, with expenses continuing to mount.
Hope has taught herself scuba diving and underwater recovery techniques specifically for searching in low-visibility water conditions. "When you step into that creek, you lose vision immediately," she described. "I've used stretchers, floats - I've even searched with my hands."
Her recovery efforts have employed multiple specialized methods:
- Working with forensic experts and anthropologists worldwide to identify exactly which bones remained missing
- Utilizing sniffer dogs trained to detect human remains
- Collaborating with a rescue otter named Splash, specially trained to locate bones underwater
- Partnering with non-profit organizations for additional search assistance
Since beginning her search in June 2024, Hope has successfully recovered 15 of her mother's bones. She believes 10 to 12 remain missing, including finger bones (phalanges), wrist bones (carpals), and a metacarpal bone.
The Cost of Closure
The financial and emotional toll of Hope's search has been substantial. She has sold her home and moved into an apartment to fund the recovery efforts. She has also begun specialized trauma therapy to cope with the overwhelming grief.
"The grief hits at different speeds," Hope shared. "It's crippling and overwhelming. My birthday was recently and there was only one person I wanted to speak to. My mum."
Hope has created a GoFundMe page to support the ongoing recovery efforts, though she has not widely promoted the campaign. She remains focused on her mission, stating: "The last year and a half of my life has revolved around recovering my mum. Once I find the rest of her, I think I'll be able to accept that she's gone."
Background and Motive
Family members believe Jamie McDonald's tragic end was connected to prescription drug dependency that developed after a severe back injury from a car accident six years earlier. "The doctor prescribed her an unnecessary amount of pain medicine," Hope explained. "It kind of just spiralled for her and led her to mixing up with the wrong people."
Hope is now preparing to face her mother's accused killers in court, though a trial date has not yet been set. She wants the defendants to understand exactly who they took from the world.
"I want them to know who she was," Hope said. "She was the sun, and that's what they took. If I could tell them something, I would tell them this - you took something that is not replaceable. What you did will not go unnoticed, and I will not stop until I bring my mum home."
