British Man Dies in 400ft Fall at Spanish Beauty Spot

A British man has died after falling approximately 400 feet from a popular tourist viewing spot in Spain, local reports confirm. The 38-year-old was discovered by a passer-by on the Paseo Nuevo coastal walkway in San Sebastian at around 11am on Friday, having plunged from the Mount Urgull area, according to Basque newspaper El Diario Vasco.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Emergency services were called to the scene, but the unnamed man was pronounced dead at the location. Authorities deployed a ladder from a truck to access the body. The incident is now under investigation by the Basque police force, Ertzaintza. A worker at the Zazpi restaurant in the San Telmo Museum reported seeing police cars and roadblocks near the Photography Society.

Autopsy and Previous Incidents

The body has been transferred to the Basque Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy. The Independent has contacted the Ertzaintza for further comment. Mount Urgull, which features a large Basque flag overlooking Salamanca promenade and Zuloaga square, is a popular viewing spot and tourist destination. The Paseo Nuevo is also a favoured trail for climbers. This is not the first fatal fall at the site; a 65-year-old woman died in similar circumstances at Mount Urgull in 2019.

In recent years, several British nationals have died in falls elsewhere in Spain. In 2025, two Scottish men, 26-year-old Evan Thomson and 19-year-old Gary Kelly, fell to their deaths from balconies in separate incidents at the Ibiza Rocks hotel. Mr Thomson fell from the sixth floor and Mr Kelly from the third floor two weeks later.
