British Tourist Arrested After Smashing Hong Kong Airport Desks with Metal Pole

A 35-year-old British tourist has been arrested following a destructive rampage at Hong Kong International Airport, where he used a metal post to smash check-in desks to pieces. The incident occurred at Terminal 1 around 6am local time on Monday, shocking early morning travellers.

Chaotic Scene at Terminal 1

The man, who arrived in Hong Kong in November and was intending to purchase a departure ticket, caused significant damage to approximately ten check-in kiosks, nearby counters, and railings during his outburst. Footage shows the vandal wearing blue jeans, a black jumper, and a black man bag as he shoved kiosks to the floor before picking up a metal pole to repeatedly smash check-in screens.

According to local media reports, the man used his trolley to knock down railings before attacking the desks and damaging a glass panel. The exact trigger for this violent episode remains unknown, leaving authorities and witnesses puzzled about what prompted such aggressive behaviour in a public transportation hub.

Arrest and Additional Charges

Airport Authority staff and security personnel rushed to the scene, warning the man to stop causing further damage before police arrested him at the bus unloading area. Beyond the criminal damage charges, authorities discovered four Viagra pills in his suitcase during the arrest.

In Hong Kong, Viagra is classified as a "part one" poison and is illegal to possess without a prescription. Those found with the impotence drug can face severe penalties including up to two years imprisonment and fines reaching £9,400. Police confirmed the British national was arrested for both criminal damage and illegal possession of controlled substances.

Similar Airport Incident in Milan

This destructive episode bears resemblance to another airport rampage that occurred at Milan's Malpensa Airport, where a man set fire to bins and smashed check-in screens, forcing terrified tourists to flee screaming from the resulting blaze. In that incident, black smoke billowed through the terminal as passengers ran for safety.

The Milan suspect, identified across Italian media as a Malian resident of Italy in his late 20s with no criminal record, was reportedly destroying screens between desks 12 and 13 when an employee intervened after noticing smoke. Witness Sophia Kim, who was at desk 13 during the incident, described the panic: "I turned around only to see the check-in counter on the other side was on fire. It was then I started running for my life with my husband hand in hand."

Both incidents highlight the vulnerability of airport terminals to disruptive behaviour and the challenges security personnel face in maintaining order during unexpected violent outbursts. The Hong Kong investigation continues as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the British tourist's destructive actions.
