Bride's Wedding Day Descends into Chaos with Paint Attack
A bride has described how her dream wedding turned into a nightmare after her sister-in-law launched a vindictive revenge attack by throwing black paint all over her wedding dress. Gemma Monk, 35, was targeted by Antonia Eastwood, the wife of her older brother Ashley, in front of stunned guests at Oakwood House Register Office in Maidstone.
Determined Bride Marries Despite Ordeal
Remarkably, Gemma composed herself after the attack, scrubbing paint from her face and body in a changing cubicle before slipping into a replacement dress to marry her partner of over 20 years, Ken. The ceremony proceeded approximately two hours later at the Victorian mansion, which had to temporarily shut down for cleaning.
A wedding guest commented: "She was so determined that she wanted her day. She's strong-hearted. When she walked down the aisle with her dad, she did amazingly to hold it all together. Everyone started applauding her."
Family Feud Leads to Uninvited Attack
Neither Eastwood nor her husband Ashley had been invited to the wedding, following a bitter family feud that began a year earlier at their own nuptials in Dover. Gemma claimed she had been falsely accused of "trying to trip up" Eastwood at that wedding, which occurred in September 2023.
Relations between the two couples have deteriorated significantly, despite Ken previously being Ashley's closest friend - he even introduced Ashley to his sister when she was just 14 years old.
Legal Consequences and Emotional Impact
Eastwood, 49, now living in Manchester, was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court after admitting two counts of criminal damage. She received a 10-month jail term suspended for 12 months, with 160 hours of unpaid work, plus a 10-year restraining order and £5,000 in compensation.
Judge Oliver Saxby KC told Eastwood: "This was meant to be a special day for Gemma Monk and her family. Courtesy of your conduct, it turned into a nightmare. You got it into your head that you wanted to wreck her day. And you did, and it was horrid and nasty and mean."
Bride's Ongoing Trauma
Gemma, who works as a mental health care worker, revealed the attack has had a dramatic impact on her life. She has battled depression and been unable to return to work since the incident on May 24, 2024.
In her victim impact statement, she said: "This has turned the most special day of my life into the worst memory I will never forget. I have lost all my dignity and good habits in life. I have lost who I used to be."
The ordeal coincided with a cancer scare for Gemma, during which she lost significant weight, dropping to a size four. She has since received the all-clear, but revealed her sister-in-law was aware of the medical issue at the time.
Financial and Personal Costs
The court heard that the bill for repairs and "loss of revenue" at the venue exceeded £5,000. The wedding for approximately 50 guests, which included a reception at The Fields at Aylesford, cost around £8,000. Gemma spent £1,800 on her original dress, in contrast to the replacement gown which was too large for her.
The couple also abandoned plans for their dream honeymoon to the Maldives because Gemma "wasn't up to it" following the traumatic experience.
Family Fallout and Moving Forward
Following the incident, brother Ashley said he had disowned his sister, adding "we don't want anything to do with her." He admitted there had been "disagreements" in the family prior to the wedding but didn't want to air them publicly.
Gemma and Ken, 39, who live with their son Tyler, 18, and daughter Naomi, 11, in Herne Bay, had been saving for years for their big day. Gemma said: "We plan to take our vows again on the same date. That way, it may override the memory, and we'll be able to celebrate. And maybe we'll go on that honeymoon."
Despite the defense stating that Eastwood wished to apologize through her lawyer Clement Idowu, Gemma responded: "I will never accept her apology. I thought the sentence was too light."
